Popeyes the seal Friday Harbour

Shannon Keyes Marion United States

Popeye is a well-known female harbor seal who frequently visited the marina of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Washington, from the mid-1990s to the late 2010s. She became a beloved local figure, easily recognizable by her cloudy white left eye. In 2005, the Port of Friday Harbor honored her by naming her the official seal and commissioning a granite sculpture that still stands in Fairweather Park.

Popeye's story is one of resilience and community support. Despite her distinctive blind eye, which could have made hunting challenging, she thrived in the waters near the Friday Harbor Seafood market, where locals often tossed her fish. This unique relationship between Popeye and the residents of Friday Harbor highlights the bond between humans and wildlife, even leading to her becoming a local legend.
