Turtleback Mountain Preserve, located on Orcas Island, offers some of the most spectacular natural landscapes and scenic vistas in the San Juan Islands. Rising dramatically from the west side of the island, the preserve spans 1,578 acres and includes 8.7 miles of hiking trails. These trails range from broad, gently sloping logging roads to narrow paths that meander through mixed forests and open meadows. Visitors can enjoy a variety of hikes, from a short stroll to the North Valley Overlook to a more challenging climb to Ship Peak. The preserve is managed by the San Juan County Conservation Land Bank and the San Juan Preservation Trust, ensuring its protection for future generations.

One of the highlights of Turtleback Mountain Preserve is the breathtaking sunset views from the top of the mountain. The August sunset on Turtleback Mountain is particularly stunning, casting a warm glow over the landscape and providing a perfect backdrop for photography.
