Miss Mona, the island's beloved camel, was a unique and cherished resident of San Juan Island. Known for her friendly demeanor and love for meeting new people, Mona became an iconic figure in the community. Her playful antics, such as dismantling irrigation pipes and opening doors, endeared her to locals and visitors alike. Mona's intelligence and curiosity made her a fascinating companion, often surprising her owner, Steve King, with her clever tricks.
Mona's journey to San Juan Island began when she was purchased from a farm in Arkansas. Initially named Mildred, she was renamed Mona after a toddler King had fostered. Over the years, Mona became a local celebrity, with a dedicated Facebook page and numerous admirers. Despite her popularity, concerns about her health led to her relocation to Tacoma, Washington, where she could receive better care and be around other camels. Unfortunately, Mona passed away due to renal failure, a common issue in female camels.
The Crystal Seas Kayaking gallery features a touching tribute to Mona, capturing her essence and the joy she brought to the island.
